 Badger  trials  and  tribulations...

Plans  to  introduce  a  targeted  badger  cull  in  Wales  may  be  put  on  hold  again  as  welfare  group  Badger  Trust  launches  yet  another  legal  attempt  to  stop  the  "utterly  pointless  slaughter  of  an  indigenous  species".

The  Welsh  Assembly  Government's  targeted  badger  cull  is  expected  to  begin  "any  day  now"  following  a  High  Court  ruling  that  it  was  lawful,  but  the  trust  has  now  been  given  the  go-ahead  by  a  judge  from  the  Court  of  Appeal  to  challenge  that  decision.

This  time,  the  trust's  main  argument  seems  to  be  one  of  semantics  -  determining  the  true  meaning  of  the  phrase  "substantially  reduce"  (as  used  in  the  Animal  Health  Act  1981  regarding  the  destruction  of  wildlife  due  to  any  infection  other  than  rabies).

However,  given  that  Welsh  chief  veterinary  officer  Christianne  Glossop  opined,  less  than  two  weeks  ago,  that  culling  badgers  can  "substantially  reduce  TB  in  cattle",  it  feels  like  Badger  Trust  is  simply  trying  to  delay  the  inevitable  while  it  tries  to  debunk  the  latest  RBCT  findings.  What  do  you  think?

 Dear  Supporter,

We  need  your  help  regarding  the  recent  announcement  from  the  government,  that  they  may  be  undertaking  a  cull  of  badgers  to  control  bovine  TB  in  England.

In  the  agreed  government  coalition  document,  it  states  that  the  government  will  undertake  actions  against  bovine  TB  (bTB)  on  a  science-based  approach.

Please  email  your  MP  asking  them  not  to  support  a  badger  cull.

Why  is  a  badger  cull  not  the  right  answer?

The  latest  science  following  a  ten  year  study  shows  that,  in  order  for  badger  culling  to  achieve  any  reduction  in  bTB,  a  cull  would  have  to  meet  very  specific  criteria  (over  a  very  large  geographical  area,  it  would  have  to  virtually  wipe  out  the  local  badger  population  and  take  place  over  a  number  of  years).
It  also  shows  that  culling  badgers  in  a  local  area  increases  bTB  infection  in  cattle  in  the  surrounding  areas,  and  achieves  only  a  limited  reduction  within  the  area  targeted.  So,  the  science  suggests  that  the  culling  of  badgers  has  only  a  limited  benefit  and  in  small  areas,  or  areas  where  there  is  less  than  a  total  cull,  the  benefit  is  clearly  outweighed  by  the  increase  in  cattle  bTB  elsewhere.
In  addition  a  cull  of  badgers  is  shortly  due  to  begin  in  west  Wales  and  the  RSPCA  believes  that  until  the  results  of  this  are  known  it  would  be  premature  for  England  to  undertake  a  cull.

Please  take  action  today.  Urge  your  MP  not  to  support  the  cull.

Other  ways  to  combat  bovine  TB  in  badgers

In  2006  when  a  cull  was  last  under  discussion,  over  47,000  people  responded  to  the  government's  consultation  and  stated  that  they  did  not  want  a  cull  to  go  ahead.  The  government  subsequently  focused  on  other  ways  of  combating  the  disease.  One  of  these,  badger  vaccination,  was  due  to  start  in  June.  If  badger  culling  went  ahead  it  would  be  difficult  to  tell  which  method  has  affected  change  in  the  disease  patterns.  This  is  currently  the  case  in  Wales.

 How  can  I  help?

Please  email  your  MP  asking  them  not  to  support  a  cull  and  urge  the  Secretary  of  State  at  Defra,  Rt  Hon  Caroline  Spelman  MP,  not  to  go  down  the  route  of  a  cull.
